Communication is the foundation of any good relationship, especially those with students. Aspects of effective communication include being open, honest, fair, authentic, sincere, and consistent. Preceptors should always demonstrate these communication skills in their interactions directly with the student and in interactions that students witness. Students learn a lot by simply watching how their preceptor interacts with coaches and even coworkers.
Any easy way to incorporate this type of communication is through the use of the One-Minute Drill. This is a quick way to check in with students while explicitly following the principles of effective communication. This can be completed in about 60 seconds while evaluating what they are doing well, what they need to work on, where contributions are being made, and any questions the student may have.
