8 Ways to Manage BOC Exam Anxiety

As an athletic trainer, passing the Board of Certification (BOC) exam is a crucial step in your career. However, the pressure of taking such an important exam can lead to test anxiety. Test anxiety is a common experience for many athletic training students, but it doesn’t have to be a debilitating one. Here are some tips for overcoming test anxiety and succeeding on the BOC exam.

Be Prepared

The first step to overcoming test anxiety is to be prepared. This means studying thoroughly, knowing the material, and feeling confident in your abilities. Make a study schedule and stick to it, take practice tests, and review your notes regularly. Feeling prepared will give you the confidence you need to succeed.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization can help reduce test anxiety. Practice these techniques regularly leading up to the exam so that you are familiar with them on test day.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial to reducing anxiety. Lack of sleep can cause fatigue, irritability, and decreased cognitive function. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night leading up to the BOC exam.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet is important for maintaining physical and mental health. Make sure to eat healthy foods that provide the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Avoid caffeine and sugar, which can cause jitters and anxiety.

Arrive Early

Arriving early to the BOC exam can help reduce anxiety. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the testing center, find parking, and check in. This will give you time to calm your nerves and mentally prepare for the exam.

Stay Positive

Maintaining a positive attitude can help reduce anxiety and increase confidence. Instead of focusing on what you don’t know, focus on what you do know. Remind yourself of the hard work and effort you put into preparing for the BOC exam, and trust that you are ready.

Take Breaks

Taking breaks during the exam can help reduce anxiety and increase focus. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths and stretch your muscles. Take a sip of water to refuel and refresh your mind.

Don’t Rush

Take your time when taking the BOC exam. Read each question carefully and make sure you understand what is being asked before answering. Don’t rush through the exam, but also don’t spend too much time on any one question. If you don’t know the answer, move on to the next question and come back to it later.

Remember – test anxiety is common! By being prepared, practicing relaxation techniques, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, arriving early, staying positive, taking breaks, and not rushing, you can overcome test anxiety and succeed on the BOC exam. Remember to trust in yourself and your abilities, and believe that you can do it. Good luck!
